Abchordis Ensemble

Abchordis Ensemble is a Swiss ensemble and association based in Basel-Stadt, bringing together talented musicians who trained at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Since its foundation in 2012, Abchordis has been dedicated to in-depth musicological research discovering masterpieces of Baroque music that have been forgotten in our time.
The ensemble’s name derives from two Latin expressions: “Ab corde” (from the heart) and “Ex chordis” (from the strings), symbolizing its dual inspiration — the heartfelt expression of music and the rich textures created by string instruments. This duality reflects its artistic philosophy, bridging emotional depth with technical excellence.

Abchordis Ensemble won the Göttingen International Handel Competition in 2015 and since then it has performed at such leading festivals as the MA Festival Bruges, the Utrecht Early Music Festival, the Göttingen International Handel Festival, Muziekcentrum De Bijloke Gent, AMUZ Flanders Festival Antwerp, Freunde Alter Musik Basel, Festtage Alte Musik Basel, the Valletta International Baroque Festival, Pavia Baroque, Urbino Musica Antica, and many others.

Among the prestigious labels for which Abchordis has recorded are: SONY Deutsche Harmonia Mundi: Stabat Mater (2016) – Dies Irae (2018) – Il soffio di Partenope (2019). Challenge Classics: Cieco Amor (2021) – L’Aureo serto (2022). The Vivaldi Edition – Naïve: Vivaldi, Cantate per Soprano I (2021) – Vivaldi, Serenata a tre RV 690 (2023). Glossa: Amate stelle (2023).

The contents of these recordings are almost exclusively of world premieres and have received much critical acclaim and numerous international awards.
